The Criolin winery is located in the municipality of Castagnole delle Lanze, a prestigious wine-growing district between the Langhe and the rolling hills of Monferrato in south-eastern Piedmont. This is a territory with a century-long viticulture vocation, a place of rare beauty, where lush, gentle hills stand juxtaposed with the craggy Alpine chain.
Despite having a long family history in vinegrowing and winemaking, with multiple generations working the land, it is the year 2000 that represents a true watershed moment for the winery. It is then that Angelo Canavero, back at the helm of the family, profoundly renovated the cellar and abandoned the old practice of selling wine in bulk and began to bottle under the Criolin label.
Shortly after, Angelo’s son, Claudio, having recently graduated from the wine school of Alba, takes over the cellar and the vineyard operations, giving further impetus to innovation and quality. Under Claudio’s guidance, aggressive pruning and meticulous sorting of the grapes becomes common practice with the sole aim to increase quality. Around the same time, integrated pest control is introduced in the vineyard together with the use of non-invasive phytosanitary techniques. As a result the wines are characterized by a profound sense of identity, unmistakably linked to the territory from which they come from. Today, Claudio is helped by his wife Giovanna and the couple look after each row, each plant with passion and dedication.
The entire production comes from estate-owned vineyards, covering about 10 hectares, and focuses on the indigenous Barbera, Ruché, Arneis, and Moscato.
