Cantina Berritta has been in the hands of the same family for several generations, cultivating vines and olives in the uncontaminated countryside surrounding the town of Dorgali, on the eastern coast of Sardinia. The estate works 13 hectares of land under a certified organic regime. The land is characterized by high altitude (some of the highest plots are located well above 1300 feet above sea level) and proximity to the sea. About ten hectares are planted with vineyards, with the remaining three dedicated to olive groves.
The soil composition of weathered granite, sandstone, and calcareous rocks coupled with the key role of the strong Maestrale wind in moderating the Summer heat and reducing humidity, creates ideal conditions for viticulture. The climate is perfectly suited to the cultivation of vines, with dry and sunny days followed by cool, breezy evenings.
Cannonau is the most important variety and takes up to 75% of the vineyard acreage. The red variety finds its natural habitat in the valleys and rocky plateaus around the town of Dorgali. Vermentino and Panzale are also grown, as well as small percentages of Syrah. Panzale is a rare, indigenous white-skinned variety and we owe it to Antonio Berritta, owner and founder of the winery, who rediscovered this once-neglected grape and saw great potential in it. In 2010 he began a dedicated work of recovery and selection, crafting a truly unique wine, highly representative of the Dorgali terroir.
Harvest is done strictly by hand. In the cellar, spontaneous fermentation is carried out by indigenous yeasts, using temperature-controlled stainless steel tanks. Depending on the Cuvee, additional aging will occur in stainless steel, cement tanks, or wooden barrels of different sizes, always with the utmost respect to local tradition.
